About

Welcome to "They Said It!", a passion project born from a lifelong love affair with cinema and a peculiar, shared joy. This app is dedicated to that special, often giddy, moment when a movie's title is spoken aloud within its own dialogue.

The Inspiration Behind "They Said It!"

I LOVE movies. I watch them when I'm happy, when I'm sad, when I need to feel something. I've rated over 5,000 titles on IMDb. They're one of my favorite art forms, and they bring me so much joy.

Ever since I was a kid, whenever they said the title of the movie in the dialogue of the movie, I'd get excited, borderline giddy, and shout, "They said it!" at the screen. I do this when I'm alone watching movies with my pup. I do this when I have Discord movie night with the homies. It's become a tradition of sorts.

I've recently learned other people do this as well. There's even a Family Guy scene where Peter does it, so I've decided to make this little app to create a database of movies that say their title in the dialogue, the specific line that's spoken, and a timestamp of where in the movie it occurs.

If you have a movie you'd like to see added, a feature you'd like to request, or a mistake you think you've found, please feel free to contact me and let me know.

Our Rules for Inclusion

This app meticulously tracks instances where a movie's title is spoken within the film. To maintain accuracy and consistency, we adhere to the following strict rules:

  • The title must be said **word-for-word** as it appears in the official movie title.
  • No changes, alterations, or additional words are allowed *within* the spoken title phrase itself.
  • Words may appear before or after the spoken title.
  • Punctuation in the title does not matter for matching purposes.

Technical Notes & Data Structure

Movies

Movies are the core entities of this database. Each entry represents a single film, meticulously documented with its title, release year, genre, and runtime. A movie can be associated with zero, one, or multiple "instances" where its title is spoken.

Instances

An "instance" captures a specific moment when the movie's title is uttered within the film. Each instance is linked to a single movie and includes crucial details: the character who speaks the line, the exact line of dialogue, and a precise timestamp. It's important to note that if a single line of dialogue contains the title more than once, it will be recorded as multiple instances, each with its own timestamp reflecting when the title phrase itself is spoken, not necessarily when the entire line begins.
